What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

We implemented a cross-curricular, team-based approach within our Grade 8 cohort, focusing on literacy, executive functioning, and common instructional practices. Staff collaborated regularly to identify and prioritize key skills (e.g., word skills, main ideas and details, responding and making connections) and embedded these across subject areas. We also introduced shared instructional routines, common language, and strategies such as structured reading approaches, vocabulary development, and collaborative thinking tasks (e.g., placemat strategy) to support comprehension and student engagement.

What gap or problem do these actions aim to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen?

Initial discussions and assessment data highlighted gaps in students’ reading comprehension, ability to identify main ideas, and respond effectively to text, which are foundational for both GLA and GNA success. These strategies were chosen to ensure that literacy development was not isolated to English classes but reinforced consistently across all subject areas. A collaborative, cross-curricular approach was selected to provide students with multiple opportunities to practice key skills in different contexts, improving transfer and retention.

Based on quantitative and qualitative data (including feedback from scanning), how effectively has this strategy addressed the identified gap or problem?

Mid-year and spring literacy assessment data indicate overall growth in key areas such as word skills, main idea identification and responding to text. Staff observations and collaborative check-ins suggest that students are becoming more consistent in applying shared strategies, and teachers report increased confidence in using common instructional language. While growth is evident, results also show variability across skill areas, reinforcing that some students still require targeted support.

How will we move forward accordingly? What adjustments do we need to make if we have or have not achieved our goals?

Moving forward, we will continue to refine and deepen our cross-curricular approach, focusing on fewer, high-impact strategies to improve consistency. We aim to:

  • Maintain a strong emphasis on main ideas, responding and vocabulary/word skills.
  • Strengthen instructional routines across all classes
  • Use ongoing assessment data to target specific groups of learners
  • Continue structured team collaboration to monitor progress and adjust instruction

We will also work toward improving consistency of implementation across classrooms. Further aligning this work with preparation for GLA and GNA, ensuring that all staff share responsibility for student success.
