Executive functioning Parent supports – June 2026

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

We identified a decline in parent participation at parent-teacher conferences and recognized that many of our families are balancing multiple work commitments. At the same time, we see that when students transition to high school, the responsibility for learning shifts more heavily onto the student. To strengthen home–school connections and better support student success, we developed and shared an Executive Functioning Parent Support resource.

This resource parallels the work we are doing with students at school by providing families with simple, practical strategies to support learning at home. The focus is on building consistent habits through the “3 T’s” — Time, Task, and Take Charge — helping students plan, start, and complete their work towards being more successful.

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

- Strengthens home-school alignment: Families are given clear, accessible strategies that mirror classroom practices, creating consistency for students between school and home.

- Builds student independence: By encouraging routines such as setting a consistent homework time, organizing tasks, and prioritizing work, students develop stronger executive functioning skills.

- Increases parent engagement: Providing flexible, easy-to-use supports allows families to stay involved in their child’s learning, even if they cannot attend school events.

- Reduces barriers for families: The resource is straightforward and practical, making it easier for busy caregivers to support their child without needing extensive time or training.

- Supports student success: By focusing on planning, organization, and self-monitoring, students build habits that improve completion of work and preparedness for school.
