Grade 8 Team - Literacy Goal

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:Our Grade 8 teaching team met as a cross‑curricular group to align with schools direction and its connection to our new literacy goal for 2025–2026. During this planning session, teachers identified shared instructional practices—including common comprehension strategies, common language, and consistent classroom routines—to strengthen literacy and numeracy development for Grade 8 students. The team also reviewed key priority areas from our literacy assessment, such as Word Skills, Main Ideas & Details, Responding, and Making Connections, to guide our collective early‑year focus.
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:
  • Establishes consistent cross‑curricular literacy practices, including shared comprehension strategies and common instructional language across all Grade 8 classrooms.
  • Reinforces our goal of strengthening reading confidence and comprehension resilience by embedding key literacy routines—such as identifying purpose, prediction, responding, and making connections—into everyday instruction.
  • Builds executive functioning skills (agenda use, time management, work organization) that support success in all subject areas.
  • Supports student well‑being and relationship‑building by creating predictable structures and shared expectations across the Grade 8 team.
  • Strengthens collaborative monitoring of student learning through regular check‑ins and team conversations that assess how these actions impact student progress and well‑being.
