Evidence Post #1 - Listening to our students

At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year staff were asked to explore their use of our school’s positive behaviour intervention supports (PBIS). Our PBIS word at MacNeill is POWER:

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

OWNERSHIP

WE NOT ME

EXCELLENCE

RESPECT

From this conversation there was an interest to see the connection that students have with this behaviour support in our school. Staff, through our advisory classes, were asked two students from each of classes to attend a student voice on June 21, 2023. From this small group of 48 students from grade 8-12 offered some feedback about their experiences at MacNeill in 2022-2023 school year.

What did Students Notice?

Positive Attitude, We Not Me and Respect were the 3 values students reported experiencing in both positive and negative ways in their classes, across the school, and amongst each other.

What students want from students?

  • To respect the rules, behavioural expectations, and each other.
  • To be included and to include others.
  • To get involved in class and in the school.

What students want from staff?

  • To understand students more (e.g., their POV, needs, values).
  • To be appreciated and recognized for the greats things they do.
  • Establish and maintain a positive school culture.

To continue next steps (2023-2024+)

  • A continuation of student voice forum(s) in October, January & June.
    • Focus for the first student voice forum is:
      • What has been different this year from last year?  What do you think has contributed to these differences?
      • What are things that we need to keep doing that are working?
      • What are things that we need to change?
