What Do Engaged Learners Look Like?

One of our goals at MacNeill Secondary is to increase student engagement, both social and academic. We know that when students are connected to their school community, are actively engaged and take ownership of their learning, they are more likely to experience success.

Part of that journey is to ask ourselves the question, "What do engaged learners look like?". How do we differentiate between "compliance" and "engagement"? Historically, educators have looked for examples of students who were "quiet" and "focussed" on the task, but we now understand that learning can often be "loud" and "messy". We also know that learning does not just happen in the classroom. Extra-curricular activies such as team sports provide opportunities for collaboration, goal-setting and social engagement.

Below are just a few examples from the past month of students who are actively engaged in their learning!
