PERSONAL LEARNING TIME (PLT)

What is PLT?

PLT is a period of instructional time each week set aside as “self-directed” time for students to learn with teacher support. Students are given choice and ownership over their learning.  Staff will facilitate a responsible learning environment by providing support, encouragement and an independent learning environment. Students will develop skills such as planning, questioning, communication, short-term and long-term goal setting, organization and time management, self-regulation and self-awareness.                               

The goal of PLT is to teach students the skills necessary to use unstructured time in a way that benefits their individual learning.

Students that are in MacNeill Secondary School during PLT are expected to be engaged in learning in a specific learning space.

Each month a new updated document will be sent showing what teachers are offering for the month. These are a combination of academic support and an opportunity for students to work in their areas of passion. This will be posted on our website, in classrooms and around the school in advance of the upcoming month.

 Student PLT Expectations: 

• Students that are in MacNeill Secondary School during PLT are expected to be engaged in learning in a specific learning space.

(Digital Device Policy = Students must ask to use their phones in any learning space).

• The above applies to all spaces, including the classrooms, library, lounge and hallways.
• PLT runs from 8:30 – 9:30am every Wednesday & Thursday.
• Classroom space is available on a first come, first served basis.
• There is a maximum number of students that can be in each space, and teachers may let you know that space is full depending on when you arrive.  
• Using this time is important to stay connected to your learning and passions. 
• However, please remember if you are in the building, you are here to be engaged in learning and in a specific learning space.

What can students do during Personal Learning Time?

• Seek academic support (from teachers and/or peers)
• Complete homework 
• Complete assignments 
• Prepare for an upcoming quiz/test 
• Catch up on missed tests/quizzes/assignments 
• Work on a project (i.e. Personal Project, Capstone)
• Engaged reading 
• Re-write or re-organize notes 
• Organize binder/notebook 
• Self-directed learning
• Passion project
