Supporting Ourselves and Each Other Through the Time Change!!

As we adjust to the end of Daylight Saving Time, some students and families may notice temporary changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, mood, and concentration. Our bodies rely on regular routines and exposure to natural light, so it can take a little time to adapt. The good news is that small, healthy habits can make a big difference and help everyone navigate the transition successfully.

At MacNeill Secondary, we know that student success is about more than academics. Our School Learning Story highlights the importance of student well-being, strong connections, and partnerships between home and school, recognizing that students thrive when they feel supported, connected, and ready to learn.

Tips for Students

🌙 Prioritize Sleep

  • Aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
  • Begin winding down 30 to 60 minutes before bed by limiting screen time and bright lights.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet to support quality sleep.

☀️ Start Your Day with Natural Light

  • Spend time outdoors or near a window early in the morning.
  • Exposure to natural light helps reset your body's internal clock and can improve alertness, focus, and mood.

🚶 Stay Active

  • Regular physical activity can help regulate sleep and boost energy levels.
  • A walk, bike ride, sports practice, or other movement after school can be especially beneficial.

💙 Be Kind to Yourself and Others

  • It's normal to feel a little more tired or distracted during the first week or two after the time change.
  • If you're having trouble focusing, break tasks into smaller steps and use planners, calendars, or reminders to stay organized.
  • Show patience with friends and classmates who may also be adjusting. A small act of kindness or encouragement can make a positive difference for someone else.

Tips for Families

🏠 Maintain Consistent Routines

  • Try to keep meal times, homework schedules, and bedtimes consistent.
  • Gradually adjusting bedtime by 10 to 15 minutes over several days can help ease the transition.

📱 Encourage Healthy Screen Habits

  • Create device-free time before bedtime whenever possible.
  • Reducing evening screen use can make it easier to fall asleep and enjoy a more restful night.

💬 Check in and Connect

  • Take time to talk with your child about how they are feeling.
  • Temporary tiredness, irritability, or difficulty concentrating is common during this adjustment period.
  • Encouragement, patience, and understanding can go a long way in supporting one another.

🤝 Partner with the School

A strong partnership between school and home helps create the balanced support students need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Consistent routines, open communication, and shared encouragement can make a meaningful difference as students adjust to the time change and throughout the school year.

Supporting Learning, Wellness, and Connection

Adequate sleep plays an important role in attention, memory, learning, emotional well-being, and overall health. When students are well-rested, they are better equipped to engage in learning, build positive relationships, and contribute to our school community.

One of MacNeill's key priorities is fostering a sense of belonging where every student feels valued, connected, and empowered to succeed. As we work through this seasonal change together, let's continue to support one another through healthy habits, patience, and compassion. By taking care of ourselves and looking out for others, we help strengthen the positive and inclusive community that makes MacNeill such a special place to learn and grow.
