2021-2022 Scholarship Application Process

Each year MacNeill Secondary School awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving students who are graduating. In order to be considered for school-based and district scholarships, students must complete an online application between April 14th and 29th, 2022. The School Scholarship Committee will collaboratively make the award selections and all scholarship winners will be notified in late June.

 

The school, the community, and the district generously donate these awards. All students are encouraged to apply. Each Scholarship/Bursary has unique criteria and some of the areas of consideration in the selection process include the following:

· Academic achievement

· Service or participation in school events

· Service or participation in community events

· Citizenship

· Individual character

· Commitment to learning

· Volunteer involvements

· Athletics involvements

· Fine Arts involvements

· Intent to study at a post-secondary institution

 

· A specific field of post-secondary study (eg. Trades, Sciences, Arts etc.)

· Gender (eg. Canadian Federation of University Women Scholarship)

· Financial need

· Family affiliation (eg. BCTF affiliation for the Richmond Teacher’s Association Scholarship)

· Elementary School Alumni (eg. Elementary alumni, PAC Scholarship)

 

In addition, other public and private organizations also offer scholarships. Please check the scholarship bulletin board in the Counselling Centre/Career Centre for more information. School-Based Athletics, Clubs, and/or Other Participation – List activities that you were involved in, what grades you participated in these activities and the approximate number of hours per month devoted to these activities (e.g. Grad Committee – Grade 12, 10 hours/month). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

School-Based Leadership Positions with Offices Held – List activities, grades in which you held a leadership position/role in the activity and approximate number of hours per month devoted to the activity (e.g. Student Council Treasurer – Grade 12, 15 hours/month). You may enter a maximum of 3

examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Community-Based Athletics, Clubs, and/or Other Participation – List activities, grades in which you were involved in the activity and approximate number of hours per month devoted to this activity (e.g. Richmond Hospital Volunteer – Grade 11, 8 hours/month). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Community-Based Leadership Positions with Offices Held – List activities, grades in which you held a leadership position/role in the activity and approximate number of hours per month devoted to the activity (e.g. RYBL Coach, Grade 11, 10 hours/month). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Academic Honours and Subject Awards or Other Academic Awards Received – List the name and year of honours and awards you have received during your high school years (e.g. Honour Roll Standing – Grades 10 and 11). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Extra-Curricular Honours and Awards Received – List the name and year of honours and awards you have received during your high school years (e.g. Athletic Award – Grades 10 and 11, Service Award, Grade 10). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list an adult sponsor, coach, teacher or community member who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Employment History – List any paid jobs you have had and approximate number of hours per month you worked (e.g. Server – Pizza Hut – Grade 12, 20 hours/month). You may enter a maximum of 3 examples for this category. Please list your direct supervisor who can confirm your role and hours.

 

Educational Plans – List what you plans are for attending College, University, or a Technical School. Include areas of specialization and be as specific as possible. For “Application Status” please enter where you are at in terms of your application status (applying later; awaiting acceptance; accepted).

 

Career Plans - What career are you planning? Be as specific as possible.

 

Financial Need – Describe any financial situation at home that might impact your ability to go to Post Secondary.

 

Covid and Volunteering – Describe any impact Covid has had on your ability to perform school or community volunteer service.

 

District/Authority Scholarship Application:

If you have not received a District/Authority nomination from a teacher and/or you are not self-nominating yourself, you can skip this question and submit your application. If you have been nomitated, please include the nominating teacher’s name on this online scholarship application. Please note that not all students will complete this section. This section is only to be completed by students who have been received a District/Authority nomination from a teacher or have self-nominated themselves because they fit the criteria detailed below.

 

What is a District/Authority Scholarship?

In addition to school-based scholarships, schools nominate students to apply for District/Authority $1250 scholarships in the following areas: Indigenous Languages & Culture, International Languages (French, Spanish and/or Japanese), Applied Design, Skills and Technologies (ie: Business, Technology, Home Economics, Information Communication Technology), Technical and Trades Training (ie: Coding, Woodwork, Culinary Arts, Automotive, Robotics), Physical Activity (ie: Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, not limited to PE), Fine Arts (ie: Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music), and Community Service (Volunteer Activity- includes awareness of local, global, and cultural issues). In order for staff to nominate a student, the student must have clearly showed an aptitude for one of these subject areas, as well as have a plan to pursue further studies in that area. In order to receive the full value of this award, recipients must be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution or approved apprenticeship program and have a social insurance number. If you are completing the district authority scholarship application section, please be sure to also include the following:

· Coursework in your Area of Interest – List courses you’ve taken, both in and out of the school, related to your area.

· Extra-Curricular Activities in your Area of Interest – List related activities you’ve engaged in outside of class time, both in the school and out in the community.

· Evidence of Achievement – You will create a video (maximum length is 1 minute) showing evidence of achievement in your chosen area. Submit it to the Scholarship Committee by sharing it with Mrs. Fackler (bfackler@sd38.bc.ca) via a Youtube link by April 29th.
