What is a loot box?

Loot boxes are virtual boxes found in video games containing random rewards that you can purchase with real money. The contents range from being purely cosmetic that change the colours of your characters items, to power-ups or gear that can dramatically alter your chances of winning the game.

Some games offer rarer items that can be resold on secondary markets for real money. The rush of buying them and rolling the dice on their contents has been likened to the psychological sensation one feels when gambling. There is growing concern around loot boxes considering the blurring of the lines between gaming and gambling and the risks it can pose to young gamers.

The Future for Loot Boxes
Many countries around the world continue to look further into this issue, particularly the gambling industry. In a rapidly changing digital age, changes and new regulations are expected in the coming years.
